Become Part of the Singing Out Family

Singing Out Las Cruces (SOLC), New Mexico's first LGBTQ+ mixed voice choir, has advanced a powerful vision of respect and inclusivity through music.

We are a non-audition chorus that accepts singers at all levels of musical knowledge and experience.

Do I need to know how to read music?

You do not have to know how to read music to join. Our Artistic Director as well as the other members of your section, and the choir as a whole are here to help you learn anything you need help with from the current music, to how choirs function, and more about music in general.

Do I need to have choir experience?

You do not need to have sung with a choir before. Some of our members have been singing with choirs their whole life, some have sung individually but never with a group, some come to us only having sung in the shower. All experience levels are welcomed and accepted.

You rehearse at a Church?
                Yes, and it's actually great!

We currently rehearse at First Christian Church in Las Cruces. We recognize that for many in the LGBTQIA+ community, churches can be a source of pain due to past experiences of exclusion, abuse, and the religious trauma associated with growing up in spaces that told us we couldn't, and shouldn't exist or by the mistreatment of people within religious groups or sometimes even our own families because of religious beliefs.

We want to be clear that while our choir rehearses in a church building we are not directly associated with the church itself. We as an organization know that, for our members, being in a space that is safe and inclusive is of the utmost importance. On that note, if this church could not provide that we wouldn't rehearse here. First Christian Church is LGBTQIA+ affirming. The church has welcomed us, as well as members to their own groups, and other organizations like ours with open arms. They not only accept us, but support us, and celebrate us.

We believe in reclaiming spaces with love, and this Church is an ally with us on that journey.

Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that Las Cruces is located on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Piro, Manso, and Tiwa peoples, who have lived in the Río Grande Valley for generations. We also recognize the enduring presence and contributions of the Mescalero Apache, Chiricahua Apache, and Pueblo peoples, as well as the Tigua (Ysleta del Sur Pueblo) and other indigenous communities who have called this region home. We honor their connection to this land, their history, their cultures, and traditions, and we commit to ongoing learning, relationship building, and support for Indigenous sovereignty and justice.
